East otago & southland
Oamaru and its iconic Steampunk HQ is a cooperatively divergent experience from the rest of New Zealand and its natural wonders. 'Trippy' one could say.
Dunedin was a unique place in its own right, but as a university town with a major brewery as one of its major attractions, we found ourselves quite comfortable among the hip, Denver-like atmosphere. Ya know, 'cause we're so cool and hip. Just above, Speight's Brewery offers a tour that gives Coors a run for its money. Not only does it offer unlimited sampling at the end, but free...water. That's just water to the right. Part of its philanthropic mission to support vagrant van dwellers I think.
The Catlins in Southland are by far one of the most enchanting areas of New Zealand. If you can find yourself far south enough to spend some time in this often overlooked area, the quiet seclusion of its lush forests and rugged coastline will have you thanking everyone else for staying north.
